  • Tool useage and management (lathe or mill)

    Hello,

Trying to use the same turning or milling tool for roughing and finishing; in separate operations.

I run into this issue with on the lathe due to turret space but it can also apply to the mill as well. On the lathe I can create a tool (say tool#8 face grooving) and then copy that tool.
So I would use the tool#8 to rough the FACE groove, return home, stop and then Use tool#8 to contour finish. (it's nice to have for final sizing machining of a tight tolerance groove so you don't have to run through the entire roughing finishing process again and again)

With the mill, when I copy the same tool and try to use it for roughing, go home and then finishing the program operations are grouped together. Is there a way to use the same tool in this manner?

    thanks,
    Paul

I do not fully understand what it is that you are trying to do. You say you want to use the same tool for roughing and finishing. But in your screen shot of the lathe file you have T7 and T8 selected for both ops. Are you using 'Tool ID' to override the 'T' code to force T7 for both op's?

For the NC code for the mill, it appears that you are using the same tool for both op's. It also look like the machine will 'go to home' between each Op and if the 'opt. stop' (M1) is on, the machine will stop before counting with the finish operation. Is this what you want for the lathe?

Are you using a milt-tasking machine where you can load a lathe tool and a mill tool in the spindle or attachment (ex. right angle head?)

    Just a few question's.......

I'm going to have to work on my words to describe what I'm trying to accomplish.

Check the tool id in second tool and set to same tool number as first one.
